Why are homebred Hanoverians sold by Dreamcatcher Meadows Sporthorses Breeding and Training Center (”DMV”) in a league of their own?

DMV is three-time North American champion USDF Breeder of the Year; breeder of individual Horse of the Year champions too numerous to list; breeder of multiple Canadian Hanoverian Gold Medal winner foals; recipient of distinction achievement in breeding award from Hannoveraner Verband; breeder of countless breed show, national and international dressage championships, and awards.

What is the Hannoveraner Verband that these horses are registered to?

The "Hannoveraner Verband" refers to the Hanoverian Warmblood Breeders' Association (Hannoveraner Verband e.V.) based in Hannover Germany. This organization is responsible for the breeding and promotion of the Hanoverian horse breed which originates from 1782. Registered Hanoverian horses are famous for their versatility and excellence in various equestrian disciplines such as dressage, show jumping, and eventing.

The Hanoverian Verband plays a crucial role in maintaining and improving the breed's quality through selective breeding, inspections, and various programs. The association ensures that Hanoverian horses meet certain standards in terms of conformation, movement, temperament, and athleticism. It also organizes auctions, stallion licensing events, and other activities related to the breed.

What is an elite Hanoverian mare (designated by EM or EMC before the mare’s registration name)?

An elite Hanoverian mare is a mare that has received specific recognition and designation from the Hanoverian Verband (Hannoveraner Verband e.V.), the official organization responsible for the breeding and registration of Hanoverian horses. The elite designation is typically given to mares that have demonstrated exceptional qualities in terms of conformation, movement, and pedigree, as well as performance in various equestrian disciplines.

To achieve the elite status, a Hanoverian mare must score a minimum of 7/10 in every category below:

  • Performance: Mares may need to participate in performance tests, competitions, or evaluations that demonstrate their abilities in dressage, show jumping, eventing, or other relevant disciplines.

  • Conformation and Pedigree: The mare's conformation (physical structure and appearance) is assessed, as well as her pedigree. Hanoverian mares with strong bloodlines, as well as those that exhibit correct and desirable conformation traits, are more likely to achieve elite status.

  • Breeding Values: The mare's breeding values, which are calculated based on her performance, pedigree, and offspring's achievements, can also contribute to her elite status.

  • Licensing and Inspection: Mares may need to undergo inspections by representatives of the Hanoverian Verband, where they are evaluated for their overall quality, movement, and potential as breeding animals.

  • Offspring Performance: The performance and success of a mare's offspring, especially in terms of competition and breed evaluations, can positively impact her elite status.

Achieving elite status within the Hanoverian Verband is a significant recognition of a mare's quality and contribution to the Hanoverian breed. Elite mares are often highly regarded for their potential to produce high-quality offspring with desirable traits for sport and breeding purposes. Check out one of our Elite mares Wishing Star DMV.

What does it mean to say a “licensed” Hanoverian stallion? Isn’t “registered” the same thing?

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!! Registration only means they have a passport, not that they have gone through the rigorous process to be licensed to breed so their offspring is eligible to be registered.

A licensed Hanoverian stallion is a stallion that has been approved and granted a breeding license by the Hanoverian Verband (Hannoveraner Verband e.V.), the official organization responsible for the breeding and registration of Hanoverian horses. This license signifies that the stallion meets certain criteria in terms of conformation, pedigree, movement, and other qualities that make him suitable for contributing to the Hanoverian breed's improvement and development.

To become a licensed Hanoverian stallion, a horse typically goes through a rigorous evaluation process, which may include the following steps:

  • Licensing Inspections: Stallions are presented for evaluation during licensing inspections, where experts from the Hanoverian Verband assess their conformation, movement, pedigree, and other relevant traits.

  • Performance Testing: Depending on the stallion's age and stage of training, he may need to undergo performance testing. This can involve participation in a performance test that evaluates his abilities in areas such as dressage, show jumping, and cross-country.

  • Breeding Values: The stallion's breeding values, which are calculated based on his pedigree, performance, and potential to contribute positively to the breed, are taken into consideration.

  • Conformation and Movement: The stallion's physical structure, movement quality, and overall athletic ability are important factors in the licensing decision.

  • Pedigree: The stallion's pedigree and bloodlines play a significant role in his evaluation, as strong and proven bloodlines are valued in breeding programs.

  • Potential for Improvement: The stallion's potential to improve certain traits within the Hanoverian breed is considered. This can include factors such as temperament, rideability, and athleticism.

  • Health and Soundness: The stallion's health and soundness are assessed to ensure that he is fit for breeding purposes.

Upon successfully passing the licensing process, a stallion is granted a breeding license by the Hanoverian Verband. This license allows the stallion to be used for breeding within the Hanoverian breed, with the goal of producing offspring that exhibit the desired traits and qualities of the breed. Licensed Hanoverian stallions play a crucial role in the ongoing improvement and preservation of the Hanoverian breed's standards and excellence.
